You might think luxurious spa treatments are a thing of the past during quarantine but, they might not have to be. Our new “normal” consists of walking a few steps down the hall to your own personal spa: your home bathroom. Keep reading for some easy and affordable ways to transform your home bathroom into the definition of tranquility. There’s a good chance you already have most of these ingredients or items lying around your house. You can find your zen without leaving your home or spending a penny.
FIRST THINGS FIRST, DECLUTTER:
A clean space equates to a clean mind. Clean your bathroom counter and only leave out items that you use daily. Put all other products away to leave yourself with a clean, minimalist space. Not only can a tidy space make a small space seem bigger, but it can improve your mental health. A minimalist environment can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression by focusing less on material items and creating a calm vibe. More space leads to more time to focus on what really matters: you.
& SET THE MOOD:
In order to really transform your bathroom into a spa, the vibes have to be right. Dim the lights, light the candles, or turn your diffuser on to set the tone for a relaxing night. A setting of warm, dim lights will allow your brain to calm down and associate the change in lighting with relaxation.
Add greenery to your shower. This small detail can make a world of difference as it improves air quality, energizes, and can improve mental health. We recommend Eucalyptus since the plant is known for its stress-relief properties. You can find fresh Eucalyptus plants at your local farmer’s market or local grocery stores like Trader Joe’s. Tie a bundle of leaves with string, twine, or even a rubber band and hang them upside down from your shower head so they dry naturally and nicely.
If you’re looking for an easier way to add eucalyptus or plant vibes into your shower, try our DAWN essential oil spray. DAWN has Eucalyptus and Rosemary extracts that will keep your mind refreshed and channel positive energy into your day. DAWN is perfect for a shower mist and an easy replacement for the Eucalyptus plant.
Make yourself a cup of hot tea or a cold, refreshing spa water to make your bathroom feel fancy. We recommend your favorite non-caffeinated tea if you’re trying to unwind and relax. To make your own spa water, simply add fresh or frozen fruits to a glass of ice water. Our favorite combinations are Cucumber Mint or Strawberry Lemon, which can be made simply by adding fresh fruit and mint leaves. Have fun and play around with your available ingredients to make a tasty, refreshing drink while you enjoy your spa day.
DIY FACE MASK: Time for the spa treatment. Whip up your own face mask in the kitchen using ingredients you (most likely) have lying around. Check out these recipes tailored to your desired skin result:
- ¼ avocado
- 1 tbsp honey
- ½ banana
- 2 tbsp plain Greek yogurt
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 2 tsp honey
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1/2 tbsp matcha powder
- ½ tbsp honey
- ½ tsp coconut oil
- ½ tsp water, to thin
Elevate your bath time experience by infusing your bath water with essential oils. Read our article, “A Beginner’s Guide to Essential Oils & FAQ” for more details about how to safely use and dilute essential oils.
Another way to amplify your ordinary bath is by adding dried flowers. You can air dry fresh flowers yourself by tying them up side down, and use them as decorations in baths or as decor pieces in mason jars. Fun fact: dried flowers don’t expire, so you can use them for as long as you like!
SCRUB IN THE TUB:
While you’re enjoying your bath or shower, try this DIY body scrub made with ingredients you can find in your pantry. All you need is 1 cup of granulated sugar, ½ cup of any oil (olive, vegetable, almond, avocado), and then about 20 or so drops of your favorite essential oil. Lavender to relax or eucalyptus to destress! You can also add some dried flowers for decoration as well.
Now your face is glowing, your skin is soft, and your mind is zen. Whether you’re in the shower or the bath, close your eyes and try to relax. You can play your favorite soft music, a podcast, or enjoy the sound of silence. This spa day will help you hopefully forget about the state of our world for a little while, and let yourself find some tranquility. Pair any of these tips with a meditation or breathing exercise, and you’ll be zen before you know it.
